My mystery, the Heart of a Runaway Girl, is set in 1986 and describes the second (fictional) case.

Of course, the phone that few carried around in the 1980s except stockbrokers, drug dealers and Michael Douglas in the movie Wall Street is number 1 — the winner!!! This beast of a phone the size of a shoe was first sold in 1983. It is the Motorola Dynatac 8000x. Why is it called the 8000x series? Who knows? It was the first phone to be offered commercially and cost thousands. Why I bring this up is that my character, Mabel, in the mystery Heart of a Runaway Girl, was a single mom and waitress in 1986 and couldn’t afford a phone (and may not even had a canvas purse big enough to carry it — it weighed over 2 pounds). Like other detectives at the time, she had to rely on her wits to get her out of trouble.
